Since debuting in 1945, the Rolex Datejust has been one of the most recognizable and imitated watches in the world. It wasn’t the world’s first watch with a date window, nor the first automatic watch, nor the first waterproof watch–but it was the first to combine all three, making it a very convenient watch to own.

Although often associated with a fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet, the Datejust has been offered in countless configurations over the years.

Timeline of Datejust References

The very first Datejusts were only offered in solid gold, and a stainless steel version would come within a few years. The famous date-magnifying cyclops first debuted in 1948 and became standard in 1953. The original size of 36mm is still offered to this day, and it was the only size of Datejust until the 26mm Lady-Datejust appeared in 1957. The 31mm variant was added a few years later, and the 41mm size wouldn’t appear until 2009. We’ll cover the reference numbers of those models now.
