How to Sell a Tudor Watch

Ever since the rebrand and reintroduction of Tudor into the American market in 2013, Rolex’s sibling company has exploded to become one of the most popular premium watch brands in the market. This is great news if you want to sell your Tudor watch. Tudor’s recognizable designs, solid quality, a recent move towards more in-house-made movements, and relatively attainable price points mean that Tudor watches hold their value well – sometimes even reselling for more than retail prices.

If you want to make your watch-selling experience even more successful, it’s important to remember that besides the general best practices when selling any luxury watch, there are also brand-specific tips to consider. When selling a Tudor watch, the following information may be helpful to keep in mind.

Identify Tudor Reference and Serial Numbers

The first step when selling any watch, including Tudor, is to identify the reference number, also known as the model number. The reference number is shorthand for explaining the exact model, material, colorway, and production era of the watch, and absolutely necessary to know when selling a Tudor.

Serial numbers, on the other hand, are unique to each watch. While it’s not as important to know the serial number as it is the reference number, some buyers may want to check your Tudor’s serial number before committing to purchasing it. That said, never publically disclose (as in a photo or text in a sales listing) your watch’s serial number — counterfeiters have been known to use real serial numbers on fake watches.

Since Tudor watches were once built with Rolex-made parts (including cases), vintage Tudor watches will have their reference and serial numbers engraved in the same positions as Rolex watches. The reference number will be engraved in the case, between the lugs at 12 o’clock. The serial number will be engraved in the case, between the lugs at 6 o’clock. Bracelets will have to be removed to see them.

Conversely, modern Tudor watches will have their reference and serial numbers engraved under the lugs. It’s much more convenient to spot them this way as you simply have to turn the watch around to check the underside — no bracelet removal required.

Assemble Documentation and Packaging

After pinpointing your Tudor’s reference number, it’s time to gather the watch’s box and papers, if you have them. Selling a complete set is not only easier than just a naked watch, but it can also net you a higher selling price. Original documentation and packaging can increase the selling price by 10% to 20%.

Plus, having the accompanying warranty cards, receipts, service records, operating manuals, brochures, hang tags, boxes, and anything else the watch came with, will help confirm your Tudor watch’s authenticity to potential buyers.

Unlike other big watch brands, Tudor does not currently offer authentication services or extract from its archives.

However, Tudor has extended its warranties. Any watch purchased at a Tudor authorized dealer from January 2020 onward comes with a five-year international guarantee. The warranty for a Tudor watch is connected to the watch (not the owner) so selling one that’s still under the warranty could be enticing for future buyers.

How Much Should I Sell My Tudor Watch For?

Once you have your important numbers, documentation, and boxes located, you should move on to figuring out how much your Tudor is worth.

Tudor’s website publishes the manufacturer’s suggested selling prices (MSRPs) for all current production watches. Yet, it is more relevant to understand the current market value of the Tudor watch you’re selling to gauge approximately how much you’ll end up with in your pocket.

To gain a better understanding of market value, you can start by checking out some of the Tudor watches we have listed on Luxury Bazaar. You can also do some research on the following websites:

  • Chrono24
  • eBay sold listings
  • Watch Charts
  • Pre-owned Watch Dealer

Remember that the prices you see published are always going to be higher than what you will end up selling your Tudor for — there has to be room for negotiations, intake costs, and margins, after all.

Is It Worth Servicing My Tudor Watch Before Selling it?

When it comes to vintage Tudor watches, it’s important to prioritize originality over aesthetics. Avoid replacing any original parts, such as the dial, bezel, or hands, in an attempt to improve the watch’s appearance, as doing so can actually decrease its value. Collectors place a high value on originality, so it’s best to leave vintage Tudor watches as close to their original state as possible–especially since, as already mentioned, they were built with Rolex parts.

As for modern Tudor watches, it’s generally not worth getting them serviced before selling them. Tudor servicing can be expensive, and the cost may not be recouped when selling the watch. Additionally, if you sell your Tudor to a professional grey market dealer, they will handle any necessary repairs, servicing, or maintenance before listing it for sale. There’s no need to bear that cost yourself when selling your Tudor.
