Patek Philippe Releases a Burgundy 5212A Exclusively for an Austrian Retailer
The Patek Philippe Calatrava Weekly Calendar ref. 5212A, with its unusual week-of-the-year complication, got immediate attention upon its release in 2019. Patek hadn’t made a steel production dress watch since the 1970’s, and they don’t often put complications on steel models. The three concentric tracks on the 5212A dial (for day, week and month) are aesthetically appealing and far less “busy” than you might expect. The 5212 is only offered in steel, and for the first five years of its production, a cream dial was the only choice. But for 2024, 20 examples of a burgundy Patek Philippe Weekly Calendar 5212A will be sold exclusively at Juwelier Heldwein to celebrate their 50th year of selling Patek watches.
What’s Different About the Burgundy 5212A Patek Philippe Calatrava?
The burgundy Patek Philippe Weekly Calendar (ref. 5212A-010) is different from the original cream version (ref. 5212A-001) in three key ways: dial color (obviously), commemorative caseback, and typeface. Shout out to Horology Ancienne for confirming these details. The whimsical handwriting-like typeface on the dial and date wheel of the first 5212A is gone, replaced by a typical clean sans serif typeface. The caseback inscription celebrates the relationship between Patek Philippe and Juwelier Heldwein, a retailer in Vienna, Austria who has been a Patek Philippe dealer since 1974:

Pricing & Availability
With only 20 pieces being produced, you’re unlikely to obtain a burgundy Patek Philippe Weekly Calendar from Juwelier Heldwein at retail price (presumably around $40,000) unless you’re already a well-established customer there. I predict that these could easily go for $80,000 or more on the secondhand market. Calatravas don’t historically trade way above retail like Nautilus and Aquanaut models do, but with such a limited production volume, this one certainly will.
